BELFOR Restores Marine Electrical Systems Following Engine Room Fire on Crude Oil Tanker

Oil Tanker "Maran Leo"

When an engine room fire contaminated critical electrical systems aboard a crude oil tanker, BELFOR delivered a comprehensive marine fire damage restoration programme. Through specialist electrical decontamination, soot removal and system recovery, fourteen electrical panels and control units were restored in just two weeks, helping the vessel avoid lengthy replacement lead times and significantly reducing operational downtime.

Crude Oil Tanker Suffers Major Engine Room Fire

The vessel was a crude oil tanker that suffered a fire in its engine room, prompting an emergency call to BELFOR Singapore for immediate inspection and recovery support.

Engine Room Fire Causes Extensive Soot Contamination and Electrical Damage

A fire broke out at one of the vessel’s diesel generators, and the tanker was brought into a shipyard for repair and restoration. When BELFOR’s Marine Team inspected the vessel, they found the damage was extensive and widespread. Two full decks of the engine room, along with the upper deck and three additional decks above it, showed significant soot contamination and thermal damage. Cables, cable ladders, the affected generator, boiler panels, lighting and instrumentation across the engine room had all sustained moderate to severe heat damage.

Left untreated, the contamination generated by the fire posed a serious ongoing threat: it would continue to corrode exposed metal and electrical components over time, risking further equipment failure well after the fire itself had been extinguished. Luckily, the vessel’s Engine Control Room, its most sensitive space, had escaped contamination entirely, giving BELFOR a critical foothold from which to plan the recovery.

Marine Electrical Restoration and Fire Damage Decontamination

The client engaged BELFOR to inspect the damage, recommend a course of action, and carry out the recovery itself. BELFOR’s team assessed every affected deck and identified fourteen individual electrical panels and control units, ranging from air compressor starters to power distribution panels, that needed to be brought back to a safe, functioning condition rather than scrapped and replaced.

BELFOR’s approach centred on precision cleaning and restoration. Each affected panel was carefully cleaned inside and out to remove soot and corrosive fire residues from surfaces and sensitive electrical components. The equipment was then thoroughly rinsed and dried as part of the controlled decontamination process.

Marine Electrical Restoration and Fire Damage Decontamination

Particular attention was given to ensuring that contamination was removed before the equipment was returned to service, as residues remaining after a fire can continue to attack exposed metal and electrical components and potentially lead to further deterioration over time.

Following cleaning and drying, the restored equipment was checked to confirm that it was free from corrosive contamination and ready to be returned to service. By restoring the affected systems rather than automatically replacing them, BELFOR provided the client with a practical recovery route for critical marine electrical equipment where sourcing replacement components could otherwise involve significant lead times.

Fourteen Electrical Panels Successfully Restored in Just Two Weeks

BELFOR successfully restored all fourteen affected electrical panels and control units, verifying each one was safe and fully decontaminated. Remarkably, the entire recovery process, from initial callout to full completion, only took two weeks. Had the damaged components instead been written off and replaced, sourcing and installing new equipment could have taken months or even years, given the specialised nature of marine electrical systems and the lead times involved in manufacturing and shipping replacement parts. By restoring rather than replacing, BELFOR helped the client avoid a drastically longer, costlier path back to operation. Both the client and the vessel’s owner confirmed the completed work was satisfactory.

Marine Electrical Restoration and Fire Damage Decontamination

Fire Damage Restoration Enables Rapid Recovery of Critical Marine Electrical Systems
When fire damaged the engine room of a crude oil tanker, the extent of the heat and soot contamination across multiple decks and critical electrical systems could easily have resulted in prolonged downtime and exorbitant replacement costs.

Instead, BELFOR applied a targeted restoration approach, combining damage assessment, precision cleaning, decontamination, controlled drying and verification of fourteen affected electrical panels and control units. The entire recovery process, from the initial callout through to completion, was achieved in just two weeks.

For specialised marine electrical systems, replacement equipment can involve lengthy manufacturing, sourcing and shipping lead times. In this case, BELFOR’s restoration process provided an alternative to writing off the affected components and helped the client avoid a potentially much longer and more costly route back to operation.
