FIRE – RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANT

In December, a wind turbine blade caught fire. The fire, which originated in the motor, seriously compromised the integrity of the 80-metre-high structure, causing structural failure and the collapse of the upper part of the tower.

Following the incident, BELFOR responded promptly and efficiently, completing the safety, demolition and disposal work in just nine days.

The project involves, first and foremost, the controlled demolition of the collapsed structure: BELFOR teams dismantle the shovel, reducing the components into parts suitable for proper treatment. A total of 18 tonnes of material are disposed of, while 60 tonnes of ferrous material are recovered, in line with the principles of the circular economy and BELFOR’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its projects.

Operations will finally conclude with the removal of the top layers of soil contaminated by firefighting water and oil and solid residues from the plant, ensuring that the entire area is environmentally safe.

Experience, expertise and rapid response were the key factors that enabled BELFOR to support the renewable energy sector in this complex case.
