Fire at Food Packaging Plant in Italy: Production Restarted in Just 40 Days After 3,000 m² Destruction

Fire damage at warehouse

In August 2024, a severe fire destroyed around 3,000 m² of a warehouse operated by Faerch Italy, mainly supplying polyester-based packaging products. Rapid intervention, structured recovery, and close coordination by BELFOR Italy enabled the plant to resume operations within just 40 days. Partial production restart was achieved within two weeks.

A Major Fire Severely Damaged the Polyester Packaging Warehouse

The fire spread quickly through stored materials, causing parts of the roof and structural elements to collapse. Around 3,000 square meters of the facility were completely destroyed, while adjacent areas were heavily contaminated by soot, heat, and fire residues.

Immediate Response Limited Damage and Enabled Fast Recovery

BELFOR Italy was alerted early in the morning following the incident and was on site within hours. By late morning, the first emergency measures had already started.

This rapid mobilisation was critical. Early action helped stabilise the site, protect remaining assets, and define clear recovery priorities together with the client.

Structured Recovery Plan Focused on Business Continuity

The recovery followed a clearly prioritised approach designed to minimise downtime. Each step was aligned with the goal of restarting production as quickly as possible.

The first phase focused on securing the site and preventing further damage. Environmental protection measures were implemented immediately to avoid contamination of soil and water caused by firefighting residues.

At the same time, corrosion protection measures were applied to machinery and technical equipment. This so-called “corrosion stop” prevents progressive damage caused by acidic fire residues and humidity, which can otherwise destroy equipment days or weeks after the incident.

Decontamination Enabled Rapid Restart of Production

The core of the project was the decontamination of both the building and the production equipment. Fire residues such as soot, particles, and corrosive compounds must be removed quickly to avoid long-term damage and ensure operational safety.

By systematically cleaning and restoring affected areas, BELFOR enabled the company to resume operations in a very short time frame. Partial production restart was achieved within two weeks, while full operational capacity was restored after just 40 days.

Demolition Created the Basis for Safe Reconstruction

Faerch Italy also entrusted BELFOR with the demolition of the irreparably damaged 3,000 m² section of the warehouse. After a detailed waste assessment, debris was carefully sorted and removed to prepare the site for reconstruction.

Both load-bearing and secondary structures were dismantled in a controlled manner using excavators, ensuring precise and efficient removal. To reduce dust emissions during the 60-day demolition phase, a water misting system was used, helping to contain particles and maintain a safe working environment.
